Background and Purpose of Request
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office was awarded $13,221.00 through the 2025 Bureau of Justice Assistance, Justice Administration Grant (JAG). These funds will be strategically utilized to address critical operational and safety needs within the Cumberland County Jail.
A priority is the acquisition of a modern key control system for the jail. The facility currently operates without a contemporary system to securely manage, track, and audit key usage, which presents an ongoing security vulnerability. Implementing a key control system will significantly enhance accountability, reduce the risk of unauthorized access, and align the facility with best practices for correctional security. The estimated cost for this system is $9,279.10. This is an unbudgeted expense, and JAG funding provides an opportunity to address this identified gap without impacting other essential operations.
The remaining funds, $3,941.90, will support the outfitting of a correctional canine and its assigned handler for use within the jail. While the agency has secured separate grant funding for the acquisition of the canine, that funding did not include the necessary equipment to safely and effectively deploy the team. JAG funds will be used to procure essential items, including leads, harnesses, collars, training aids, and canine care equipment. Establishing a fully equipped canine team will enhance the Sheriff’s Office’s ability to detect and deter contraband within the facility, contributing directly to the safety of staff, inmates, and the public.
